Idea Sheet
for Clubs and Divisions
Ideas shared at the District
Convention Teenager of the Year session on Saturday afternoon:
Miscellaneous:
1. Create a proposed time line to make sure all
critical deadlines are met (attached)
2. Share ideas with clubs
3. Create a sample press release (attached)
Soliciting nominations:
1. Press release
2. Letter to all area high schools
3. Notice on local cable channel events
schedule
4. If more than one Kiwanis Club in a town, may
want to consider combining efforts
to recognize
just one Teenager of the Year for town
Choosing the Club and Division
Teenager of the Year:
1. It is imperative that judging be impartial
and fair to all nominees without regard
to "whose
child they are" or other factors
2. Engage outside judges with no affiliation
with nominees, their schools/employers
3. Copies of nominations to each judge (with
names blocked out if risk of recognition)
4. Consider a score system: points 1-10 assigned to each question/status;
add up
for each
nominee; Chair tallies all judges' results, thus a winner emerges
5. Or, give to an outside, independent group,
such as a group of college professors
or large
business Human Resources Dept, to judge as they see fit
Recognition for winner:
1. Savings bond
2. Cash
3. Specified amount toward college/vocational
school tuition
4. Gift suitable for college/travel, such as
luggage
5. Plaque
Ways to present recognition:
1. Have winner and parents attend Club/Division
Council meeting
2. Issue press release; press available at
event for photo
3. Present to winner at school assembly
(important peer recognition)
4. Plaque for school with winner's name, year
SAMPLE DRAFT OF PRESS RELEASE - edit
as appropriate for your club
(put on
Club/Division letterhead, and include a copy of your club bulletin and an IDD
brochure when presenting to the press)
